Sherman Street Denver Colorado Art Print

from $35.00
I created this watercolor illustration, an aerial view of Sherman Street in Denver’s Capitol Hill neighborhood in August 2025, as the first in my Bird’s-Eye Streets collection. This piece takes recognizable, iconic landmarks like the Colorado State Capitol, the Cash Register Building, Civic Center Park, and the downtown skyline and renders them in intricate, loving detail. Inspired by my love of miniature worlds, tilt-shift photography, and my own 15-story view I look out from every day, I see the familiar from a new perspective, with an almost childlike whimsy and playfulness.

Sherman Street is famous for its numerous mid-century Art Deco and Moderne apartment buildings, constructed primarily in the Great Depression. The street runs through the Colorado State Capitol Building and past the mile-high marker on the Capitol's 17th step, exactly 5,280 feet above sea level. This street will one day feature the imagined 5280 Trail, a 5.28-mile urban trail loop around downtown Denver, transforming existing streets into space for people to walk and roll and explore our city in a new light.

As an urban designer and planner, I blend my education and experience in the built environment with my visualization skills as an artist. I created this original piece in three versions: existing conditions, trail, and visioned build. I drew the 5280 Trail, as envisioned by community members and designers in 2019, along Sherman Street's footprint. Then, I constructed visioned buildings to replace the many parking lots along this corridor, a remnant of Denver’s car-oriented urban renewal era. The illustration, when viewed as a full sequence, shows the power of public space investment to spur new development of much-needed housing to further animate the urban realm with vibrancy and activity.

The illustration is created with digital watercolor, using 25,000 pen strokes in all. The process took 15 hours from start to finish, with each moment hand-painted with love, thoughtfulness, and care.
